The attrition of the seemingly endless warfare since 2002 has probably had one major effect on the terror-groups - the majority of their leadership and field teams that knew what they were doing have been effectively exterminated over the last sixteen-odd years and now they're down to the cannon-fodder and incompetent dregs that are far more dangerous to themselves than they are to US or allied military personnel.

A major problem for a lot of Islamists is their adherence to the fatalistic worldview that nothing happens absent the will of their god. The result is that they tend to deliberately avoid planning any action in proper detail lest they appear prideful or lacking in faith.

"Check six" is a notion that is utterly alien to these mutts and it's also a very good reason why so many of them get their brain pans ventilated dorsal to ventral.

The paradox here is that for them to transcend this kind of thinking they need to pursue an education outside of Islam and if they do that then they'll probably decide that they don't care to be cannon fodder for some bunch of rich Saudis.

The problem with that kind of thinking is that the person who strangles the king usually goes on to murder a shit-ton more people.

You just end up trading a tyrant with a crown for a tyrant with a cause.

Most of the totalitarian causes are indistinguishable from religions anyway. Secular insanity can only thrive in places where religious insanity has already fertilized the ground with endless bloodshed. It's still the same placing of the hopes of simpletons into a belief system that says paradise will be achieved by a maximum amount of tyranny and mass-murder. I've believed for a very long time that Stalinism wouldn't have been so successful in killing off millions if the Orthodox Church over the centuries hadn't so effectively helped the monarchy turn Russia into such a brutal nihilist hellscape where near-total contempt for human life had been the prevailing attitude for centuries. Stalin didn't invent that contempt on his own, he simply exploited an attitude that was already firmly entrenched. And that's what makes the Russians still so dangerous today because they're mentally and emotionally the identical bloody-minded nihilists that they've been for at least the last five or six hundred years.

The bottom line here is that someone who is irrational is going to be irrational no matter what ism they choose to believe in.

See, the thing with secularism or atheism or even 'science' is that they all too often take the place of religion for many people and then get perverted into just another form of religion where people invest their beliefs.

The bottom line here is that someone who is irrational is going to be irrational no matter what ism they choose to believe in.

And this world has no shortage of irrational people.

Extremist brutality merely seeds more of the same. Unless the effort is made to break the cycle, like with the way the American revolution inspired the birth of most of the Western democracies, the same thing will repeat infinitely. It's too easy to fall back into the old ways, like with the way Putin's done in Russia.
