Thge article didn't really present the case either way. Are there particfular environmental concerns wiht this mine, as compared to others? Is it in a tourist location? Has damage wrought by another mine made them antsy? Or is it just a general "mines bad" mentality?

I was also suprised there'd be any gold left in the area, considering continuous habitation for thousands of years.

As the price of gold rises, deposits that were unprofitable 5 or 10 years ago are becoming worth exploiting. We're seeing the same thing in Canada.

Their fear seems to be born out of ignorance, they need a mining major to show them how to make some coin in a primary industry. At some point you have to quit making pennies off of touring people around the ruins of your formerly grand civilization and build something new.
