DrCaleb DrCaleb:
And there are those of us who read that book, planned ahead and don't have to dip into our retirement fund because we have 3 months wages in a savings bond we can cash when in need.

5P's.

Gotcha. Those poor slobs who don't make same money as you and have to dip into savings say for example, when the furnace dies, or when the clutch on car goes. How dare Canadians dip into there savings to stay afloat. If only we had your income Dr. C. then we too could look down on others.

Yup. You can just blame me for your poor life choices, or your plain bad luck. But the life of a contractor sometimes goes like; 3 months with really good income, 6 months with none because you were self employed and do not qualify for EI. And no health plan, no retirement plan.

So you learn to wrench your own car, so a $150 clutch doesn't turn into a $3000 bill, and learn where the furnace parts supply stores are so a $20 part isn't a $300 house call in the dead of winter. And you learn to not spend outside your means, so you have food on the table and your bills are paid and your RRSP is topped up after 5 months of zero income.

But, I'm sure that it's all my fault.

Nope he planned ahead and did all he could to be safe incase something happened. Something EVERYONE should do. Even if it's setting back 10-20 dollars a check. Over time that builds up. Doing this saved me last year.

I'm sure his misfortune is your fault too, for planning ahead.

Both my wife and I created RRSP's. I did not dip into mine until I had to convert it into a RIF. Take the minimum and the RIF capital still increases.

Recently took out some extra to buy a precision target rifle and scope. [drool]

In reality though it doesn't take much for a plan to get completely destroyed by the financial sector. I doubt I was the only one who had twenty years worth of savings, that were supposed to be in safe funds, essentially wiped out by Wall Street in 2008. It's great for people who don't suffer the same thing but please don't act like the rest of us are just fucking around doing crazy and risky things or blowing all our available money on toys and luxuries. We weren't. We got fucked over and stolen from by a bunch of professional criminals, ditto with what the Saudis did to the oil price, and I don't know how anyone is ever supposed to cover every single eventuality to keep that from happening.

Yup I hear ya.

I was lucky enough to be in telecomm's and computer stuff. When the Saudi's fucked things up in 2008 I had already retired, again more luck.

I had one fund management company lose me a great deal of money in 2010(?). 8O They made trades that put fees in their pockets, but ended up losing the fund billions. But portfolio holders didn't find out about it until the yearly reports were mailed out. Then I saw the 'Value Change this year' line in the negative thousands instead of the positive, and I was pissed!

They were charged under the securities act or something. Had to pay a token fine. People holding portions of the fund got screwed, as usual. It's fine. I don't think my health will hold out so that I can ever retire anyhow.

It's not for lack of trying, it just seems that my youth as a second hand smoker or a genetic predisposition to diabetes will probably end me. I don't mind though, everyone has to go somehow. I just hope there is a gear shift in my hand when it happens. 8)

It's a bit out of date, property isnt moving like it used to.

You aren't kidding! I've had my place up for sale for a year, and have hardly 1 inquiry in two months.

I think I'll rent for a year and wait for the market to really tank before buying something else. If I can get it to sell, that is.

If only you could relocate your house to Toronto and sell it here. You'd be able to list it for 3x what you paid for it and you'll sell in a week for $100k over asking.
