JaredMilne JaredMilne:
Poilievre's efforts might play well to the base, but whether he can sell that to the broader public whose votes he needs to win is up in the air.
I remember how Stephen Harper first won back in 2006. The Conservatives stuck to a clear, concise five-point platform of things that could appeal to a broad number of people like a GST cut. Harper also kept a firm leash on the social conservatives, refusing to let them bring forward abortion restrictions or rollbacks to gay marriage.
Remember the political consequences he suffered in Alberta?
Me either.
Meanwhile, in 2012 one "lake of fire" comment pretty much destroyed the Wildrose Alliance's chances of winning the Alberta election.
So whoever wins the Conservative crown is really going to need some political salesmanship skills.
I voted for Harper as I thought that he was the best man for the job back then. I'll reserve my decision for Pierre until I get to know him, or until he puts his foot in his mouth a few times. Problem is just the word "Conservatives" leaves a sour taste in my mouth right now.
