It's time these "third world countries" to start taking responsibility for their actions. There's no point in banning things like plastic straws in Canada if these assholes are allowed to dump tons of plastics into the oceans unimpeded.
When it comes to crap like this there is no such a thing as a developing county or uneven playing field. Everybody has to be held to the same standards for it to work otherwise we're just pissing against a wall.
I wondered where those flip flops had gotten to, I thought I had left them at the pool.

Yup! Let's not bother to clean up our own back yard. Just fill it with old fridges, rusting cars, and let the weeds overgrow. Our neighbours are doing nothing, why should we?
Is it any wonder that they found this animal full of plastics where they did? All one has to do is look at who's most responsible for the continued release of plastics into the oceans to see why it's no surprise.

Shithole countries, every last one of them.
Why some Canadians look to the US as a model is beyond me.
So, what about other countries? Were these ones on the list the only ones examined or just the only ones reported on this chart?
Just an observation.

We definitely need to keep our own backyard clean. But I agree with oldguy. We could all go back to the stone ages and it wouldn't matter if even 1 single country like China started spraying nerve gas everywhere or dropping nukes.
The only way the environmental issue ever gets solved is globally. You need to stop buying anything from these "shithole" countries, a full on embargo, until they start operating according to global standards. Not only is it bad for the environment and everyone on the planet, it also destroys local jobs in factories that can't compete economically with shithole factories that spend $0 on environmental concerns.

So why don't we put on our big boy pants and lead from the front, instead of the rear? "Globally' means someone has to be the first. The world has beat many environmental challenges, like acid rain and CFCs. It just takes one country to start it.

I agree. Honestly I think the best way would be to get the G8 to get on board. Every member has everything to gain, and little to lose. Better world environment, and no cheap polluting imports from "shitholes".

You can start by refusing to sell any more oil or coal to China since those are key components in the production of plastics.

Most plastics come from natural gas and crude oil. If I'm not mistaken, it's US coal that gets sold to China, as it has too high a sulphur content to be used in metal foundry.
That whale is proof Mother Nature is cleaning up the environment for us.
Don't listen to these environazis!

I just thought the Whale was on a plastic cleanse.

Nobody said do nothing but, what we have to do is go after the big polluters with a vengeance because our pollution is infinitesimal when compared to theirs.
But, sanctimonious people in this country would rather hurt themselves and their own economy by banning things that have a near zero impact on the environment just because it makes them feel better about themselves.
So, why are these same save the planet types ignoring the elephant in the room while focusing on the mite in the corner? Maybe if they quit using that tired old "poor 3rd world country" excuse about why they don't go after the big time polluters they could actually start trying to get them to clean up their act so our planet would be much better off.
But, then again everyone knows that they'll never do that because, they're quite content to let our competitors and trade partners pollute at will because this is all about wealth redistribution rather than cleaning up the environment anyway.
I'm sorry but, unless you get these other polluting countries to follow the same rules you've imposed on yourself all the feel good programs in the first world aren't going to do squat to save the environment, especially when you turn a blind eye to who's still causing the damage.
