"We fought like tigers," recalls George MacDonell, 86. He'd run away from home at 17 to join the army, and two years later was among the 2,000 Canadian soldiers sent on the ill-fated mission to help defend Hong Kong, a British colony.

So young and full of hope and energy. How sad that we lost so many of our very best. I love this Canadian image - "It was tricky ... but we stickhandled through it."
