Has he gone insane? Did his announcement "I'm the king of the world!" go straight to his head? WTF is wrong with these Hollywood types. Many don't have a GED but they think they all know the solutions to all of the world's problems.
I know really, really, really smart people that work typically at depths much greater than what that well is at, Mr. Cameron said.
Ack! Get a Thesaurus man! Only morons repeat adjectives to indicate hierarchy.
Thanks but no thanks was exactly what he should have heard. His "expertise" is the detailed capturing of images at depth and not the technical difficulties of turning off a fire hydrant from 2km. I'm sure after it's all over they'd be more than happy to let him down there, but until then..............stay in LaLa Land.

James Cameron is a decent director, but his first passion is the sea. He's known in the community as an accomplished sub-mariner. He directs to earn money to keep exploring the sea.
BP is probably fielding a thousand calls a day from folks who think they've got the problem sorted. In my experience, these people generally don't have a full grasp of the technical challenges and the scope of the problem.
Take the Florida Bubbas who were a YouTube sensation with their idea to pick it up the oil with hay. Looks great--until you do the calculation as too how much hay you'd need.
"Choban" said I'd say they have nothing to lose by letting him try, he has knowledge about working at those depths and contacts with others that can help.
"While acknowledging that his contacts in the deep-sea industry do not drill for oil, Mr. Cameron said that they are accustomed to operating various underwater vehicles and electronic optical fibre systems."

All he knows how to do is take pictures.
He made a film in and around the wreck of the Titanic.
Getting the submersibles down to teh site does not appear to be the issue. Plugging the damn hole seems to be the issue. Unfortunately, Mr. Cameron, like mnay others, has no appreciation for the scope of his own ignorance.

...as well as he studied physics in school.
So why the fuck not. Fresh eye never hurt.

And always had a passion for being under the sea.

More experience than BP, it seems.
