Why are you incredulous at this? Many women breastfeed until 24 mnths., and in some cultures longer.

Because it's ridiculous to breastfeed a child with a full set of teeth, which can walk by itself, and eat everything you make for him, including MacDonalds and brussels sprouts.

In some cultures, parents kill their children because they look at a boy or don't want to wear a headscarf.

Most women go back to work after 16 weeks of maternity leave, that includes 6 weeks prior to giving birth. So yes, breastfeeding for a year and a half? Not normal in Europe.
