Canada's prison system is grappling with an explosion of gangs that is fuelling violence and the drug trade behind bars and crime on the street, according to documents obtained by CBC News Network's Power & Politics.
It's prison they are in there for a reason lock them in their cells for 23 hours a day and let them out in shifts. How you going to form a gang or recruit or much of anything else
Given our propensity for following all things America this shouldn't come as a suprise.
They've had prison gangs for over half a century so it's kind of a no brainer that it would happen here eventually. Hopefully these gangs don't extend their influence outside the prison walls like the American ones.
Good point. Why is it that prisons can't keep the drugs out? It's prison, for Christ's sake. Surely Corrections Canada could keep drugs out if they really wanted to. How hard could it be?
More drugs, more gangs. That's what prohibition does.
I imagine if drugs were legal like you want, they still wouldn't be legal in jail. Just like booze. So now what?
Removing the profit motive to join a gang leads to fewer gang members. The people with nothing to lose have the most to gain from prohibition. Will they find something else when prohibition ends to cheat the system, maybe. But it won't be as lucrative as black market drugs, and someone will already be doing it.
None of this would be happening if pot were legal.
Because no one has gone to prison for anything else ever. Or at least that's what I'm told when I visit Humbolt County.

Yeah...that's it exactly.
None of this would be happening if pot were legal.
Sure it would, because the Canadian Gestapo would just make shit up

Prison gang population jumps 44% in 5 years
So.. Who's got an idea besides decreasing profits for gangs to reduce this? Or do you all not care?
Or maybe you think it's not your problem, like we all did when it was just an American phenomenon.
Prohibition encourages gangsterism.
Stop the violence. End the drug war.
My favourite part of this story is how the locals here think it's a big joke.
