Engineers have declared the crippled Costa Concordia cruise ship completely upright after a 19-hour operation to pull it from its side where it capsized last year off Tuscany.
Pretty amazing bit of engineering! Good on the Italians for orchestrating this! Much of the rest of the world would've just blown the thing to pieces and made a mess.

Yes. They are famous for their feats of gallant seamanship (snicker).
Italians over the centuries have had some very impressive engineering feats,n ot mention art. This is the of Leonardo De Vinci and Michelangelo. What they have done here is very consistent with their history.

Bravo for an excellent job.
The engineer that directed that salvage effort is from Oz.

I know there's an impulse to snark at the Italians but in this case they really have pulled off something amazing and they really do deserve credit for doing something awesome. And the techniques they've developed with this situation may well be of benefit with another similar situation.
I guess I'm saying not to snark too hard at these guys because the way the world works you may end up needing their expertise someday.

In summer 1939, German foreign minister Joachim von Ribbentrop told Winston Churchill, If theres war, the Italians will fight on Germanys side. Churchill replied, Thats fair; we had them last time.

The Wizard, or one of the Witches?
Impressive sight seeing the ship being turned upright.
Yes it was quite something. Too bad they finished it at night (our time) I wanted to watch it live. The time lapse picture are very good though.
