The RC and Anglican churches usually rule most claims of possession to be mental illness. Unlike the movies, getting permission to perform an exorcism is extremely difficult and rare. It's usually smaller fundamentalist Protestant 'Talking in Tongues' churches that are claiming to have cast out all these demons.

No, the majority of the exorcisms in the world occur in the Eastern Orthodox Church as they tend to blame all sorts of things on demons.
The Pentacostal Churches don't do the formal exorcism thing but they do talk about demons for the simple reason that they believe in Scripture.
Now do I rule out demonic possession as a reality? Nope, not at all. Why? For the simple reason that I do not presume to know it all like so many secular folks do these days. I certainly won't jump to conclusions about anyone being possessed (save for Duelin_Dalt, that f*cker is DEFINITELY possessed, or f*cked up...one or the other...or .) and I'm content to just leave that particular discipline to those who are willing to pursue it.

And yet we allow guys like Offer Schlomi, to sell us magic bracelets, copper infused cloth, fat destroying pills, vibrating foot massagers, oxygenated water and a magic penis enlarging enzyme all of course with a doctors approval and for our health.
So, maybe we shouldn't be so quick to judge the effects of exorcism on a religious persons beliefs especially when we see the secular crowd falling for one hell of alot more placebo's than they do.

A consensus of the IPCC agrees with you.
