It's a $100,000 question, one that apparently has some of Michael Sam's teammates steaming mad. It would have been wonderful if the Sam chatter had ended after he finally made his CFL debut Friday night in Ottawa.
Michael Sam isn't a very good football player at all. I remember seeing bits from his NFL training camp with the Rams, as well as his debut with the Alouettes. Very slow player that can't adapt to the professional game, whether it be NFL or CFL. He looked confused against the RedBlacks the other night, and was pretty much irrelevant.
Won't be the first or last time that a pro team tosses out a big contract to someone who fizzles. Alexandre Daigle, anyone? It's a part of sports that endlessly repeats itself. This one is maybe a bit more noticeably given the relatively small size of CFL salaries but it's really nothing out of the ordinary, other than that Michael Sam has had a media spotlight on him for other reasons.
Hey, if you want to beat up on the guy for being lazy, out of shape, or over-rated then I'm with you. If you want to make a bigger issue out of it than it needs to be just because the guy is gay then that's just being kind of mean.
This issue is a 2 way street. When you willingly use your sexual preference to garner national media attention, get a TV special to the detriment of your current employer and gain numerous tryout attempts, then you should expect your sexuality to be brought up when you attempt to make a comeback in a different league, even by your detractors.
Is he a lousy football player because he's gay..... no. He's a lousy football player because of his lack of motivation and ability who, unfortunately used his sexual preference to extend his 15 minutes of fame to a couple of years and the sooner the CFL realises what the NFL did the better off they'll be. But, given todays all consuming politically correct climate he's probably next in line for the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

Actually I was reading your first comment as well as the others using my phone, my thumb must of touched the edge of the screen and hit the add button when I had absolutely nothing more to add, there for the reason of a blank post.

"BeaverFever" said I guess they're paying for the media attention and expecting a bigger fan draw, which is a tactic one would more likely expect of the Argos.
Nah, this is classic Alouettes. Remember when they signed the CFL rights to Tim Tebow?

And don't forget Chad Randy Johnson, aka Ochocinco.

Or, how about Vince Feragamo, David Overstreet, Billy White Shoes Johnson and Fred Belitnikoff?
UPDATE: and he's again, most likely for good. Most likely some deep personal issues that got covered up or ignored as the media did their little happy dance around him.
I guess this is the only way the Alouettes are ever going to learn to put sport ahead of spectacle. I would feel sorry for the Alouettes fans but, you know, fuck Montreal.
I don't see him lasting long up here at all.
